How Rankings are Determined

The WNFC power rankings are determined by a committee of professionals and head coaches who make up the Women’s Football Rankings Committee (WFRC). Every week the committee will vote on rankings for every team and give each team the corresponding number of points. the average ranking is determined for each team. The committee members take into account:

-Overall Record
-Strength of Schedule
-Head-to-Head Results
-Common Opponent Performance
-Points Allowed (Defense)

How Rankings are Determined

The AWFL power rankings are determined by win-loss record, points scored, and points differential. The rankings are determined with a simple formula with the 3 metrics listed. The most important factor is the teams record, then the points scored, and finally by the points differential. This is why you see very high scores, especially in the early season where teams are trying to pad their rankings early in the season.

How Rankings are Determined

The WFA power rankings are determined by Massey Ratings. The Masseys are a mathematical formula which ranks teams based on who they are playing. This evaluates games where there are discrepancies in strength of schedule between teams. This also makes regional comparisons between teams easier.

WFA Power Rankings

Masseys take into account:

Prior games performance
Strength of Schedule
Offence and Defense Performance

Each game will have a predicted score that the teams are expected to achieve. Meeting the score will keep the teams at the current ranking. If either team does better or worse than the predicted score, they can advance or fall in the national rankings.

This is how you can have a team that will have fewer wins, but playing a tougher schedule, having a higher ranking than one with more wins, but play an easier schedule.
